Default 7500 oil change on 2.7T - conventional oil or synthetic

Is the synthetic worth it or not? I have it my my 911 (which is going to run hot anyway) so it's damn well worth the extra expense. Thoughts?

My dealer says no, but I brought in my own for them to put in.
BTW for 2001 the service will not start untill 10,000 miles so I am told.

Default Mineral oil versus synth? Go with mineral (conventional). No one has yet shown synth to be better

Just a lot of marketing hype from people trying to sell synthetic oil. Usually synthetic oil doesn't break down as much but it's not does not provide the lubricity that mineral oil does. If you change your oil every 7.5k miles you'll be fine. Look at it this way. If synthetics were better why aren't the manufacturers of autos using them? Marketing is all about creating markets and that's how we've all heard about synthetic oils.

If use regular motor oil & you run hard for a long stretch (not that anyone reading this would) AND don't give your engine time to run at a low speed & cool down, the oil can start to burn or "coke" in lines to the turbos...thats why the aftermarket purveyors of "sport" turbos all recommend synthetic.

The incremental dif in cost ($20/per change-$40/year at 15K miles/yr) is pretty insignificant when you consider the value of the car...think of it as cheap insurance.

For what its worth, I have talked to three mechanics (two at my dealer, and one at the next closest one) from two Audi/Porsche dealers here in Oregon. They all three (independantly of one another) suggested running synthetic in the turbo motors because of heat and compression issues. Dont put it in until the engine is completely broken in they also said. If you stick with conventional and follow Audi's recommendations, you will be fine I was told (one said the rest of the car will fall apart before the engine basically). Lets face it, oil is way better than it was ten years ago. But so is synthetic oil.

I have a 4.2 and they told me I would be fine with the processed dinosaurs, but still said if it were their car, they would run synthetic.

Contrary to another post-response to your question, synthetics have been proven time and again to be superior. All your high performance manufacturers (Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, even the Corvette) are factory filled with synthetic. Ford Taurus's are not. They get driven differently and the engines operate at lower temperatures. By the way Audi uses Mobil 1 in the R8's. Mobil One is by far the most advanced of the synthetics and is available in about 200 or so specially developed application formulations ranging from antarctic to racing. We can buy about two off the shelf.
