Default Question about buttons on dashboard (dead buttons)

I ordered a 2001 A6 4.2 several weeks ago. Nemo Blue/Melange. I ordered it with the premium pkg. (xenons, heated seats/steering wheel, window shades), 17" "pie plate" wheels, and rear airbags. It will have ESP as a standard option, although I could care less about that feature. I know that on MY2000 cars, (and it should be the same for MY2001 cars), the buttons for the rear sun shade and ESP are located where the "credit card tray" are normally located. This means that there is a "dead button", right? Am I missing something? What else could fill the 3rd button place? It seems odd to me that on a 54K+ car, there is a "dead button". I hate dead buttons!!!

Default I guess I was wondering....

if there is nothing that could possibly go there,(ie: another useful button) why even put a dead button into the design? It seems to me that there is another way. Maybe I am just being too picky! Is it possibly for future factory additions? (ie:an option that will be offered in the future)

My 4.2 has the ESP defeat switch surrounded by two dead buttons directly to the left of the hazard switch. I believe that the electric sun blind and acoustic parking switches would fill up those spaces. There are also 2(out of 6)dead buttons on my steering wheel because I didn't order the telephone.

Older A6 steering wheels had buttons to change to the next/previous preset radio station where the phone buttons are now located.

Does anyone have any idea if it's possible to change the useless phone buttons to perform that function (my guess it is either a simple wiring change or an impossible software change).
