My 2.7T is loud at startup - any ideas?
Car is significantly louder at startup, sounds like a '83 Tercel for the first couple of miles. I can hear the engine all the time, as opposed to the car I test drove, which I remember being much quieter.
This isn't a symptom of torn throttle body boot, is it?

Besides the auto choke making the engine rev a little higher when it's cold there should be no significant loud noise at startup. I would call the dealer for an appt. immediately.

Besides the high idle at cold startup, I believe the engine cooling fan (belt driven) also is engaged for the first few minutes. I also notice mine comes on briefly, at slow speeds on warmer days. When that fan is engaged, the engine makes a little more noise.

noises at startup
My car makes a couple noises at startup.
1. The exhaust noise is louder than usual. I presume that some valve is opened to help speed the warmup of the catalytic converters or passenger heater.
2. The engine makes a fair amount of either knocking or valve noise. I keep forgetting to check my oil though.
These both go away in about a minute.

FWIW, your description sounds just like my 2000 A6 2.7T. At first, I thought I was developing an exhaust leak. But the sound is much more noticeable _inside_ the car, and isn't noticeable outside (which an exhaust leak would be). It goes away very quickly, i.e., within a minute or so.
Puzzling, but I don't think it's anything serious. On my tiptronic, it's also amplified following a cold start because the transmission stays longer in 1st than when the cat. converters are warmed up. The noise is more pronounced at the higher engine rpm.

Steve B and Rick - sounds like you have the same exhaust sound as I do....
I'll take that to mean that the "noise" is normal. The sound goes away in a minute in mine too. Just seems a bit wimpy for such a happenin' engine.

seemed odd to me too
Not that the noise is horrible or anything, but is exactly the kind of noise that you notice the 2.7T doesn't have. On any other car it wouldn't seem odd.
On a separate note: Notice how when you punch up the engine, you hear the extra noise mostly from the back of the car (exhaust system) not directly from the engine? That baby is quiet.
