500 miles, One Nigglie
5K+ rpm range for a brief second or two. Gotta love it!
Now for the nigglie
About 2 days ago the headliner starts and continues to make a crackling sound.
This happens when the car in in tranistion between one road surface plane and other. Like turning into an uphill driveway. The car body is
under stress. something above is moving and wants go one way and something else the other.
I have no basis for this theory but here goes.
The headliner must have some sort of insulation material between it and the roof of the car.
The roof stresses in one direction and the headliner stays put. The poping/crackling/chatter
I hear is the two surfaces friction shearing off against one another.
I'm hoping you all come back and say Oh yeah! happended to me to and this is how they fixed it.
Seems it comes from the front edge of the moon roof to the top of the windshield.
Awaiting numerous re-assurances.

Does this noise you hear still happen if your sunroof is tilted up or opened? That should give you your answer.
If that is where the noise is coming from, then there is nothing you can do. It is simply the chassis flexing on uneven surfaces. Almost all cars suffer from this. Some obviously have stiffer chassis's than others. But I have never ridden in a vehicle that did not do this to some extent. I have noticed that as I have progressed into finer cars, I notice more of these "niggly" annoyances. This is frankly because the cabin in our A6's is very quiet, and I notice these things more than say in my Land Cruiser (which squeeks a lot!). There always seems to be something no matter how much $$$$$ you spend. After all, a car is welded, bonded, bolted and screwed toghether out of thousands of pieces. I can't believe the level of tightness that is achieved today by most manufacturers to tell you the truth.
Good luck and keep us posted.
The fix was a trip to the dealer for a strip of felt to be glued inbetween the roofliner and inside of the windshield glass. Next time you're in an Audi lot take a look at the difference between an A8 and A6 roofliner install. The fit and finish on the A8 is that much more detailed(and expensive).
Now the brake pedal has a weird squeak! As long
as my problems remain in the realm of "Niggly" I'm
going to be just fine with this car.
