Default Front License Plate Holder

I just purchased an extremely low mileage, pristine condition '96 A6 Quattro. The front license plate holder was not installed but the kit (holder, bracket and screws) was included the trunk (just like a new car). CAN ANYONE HELP EXPLAIN HOW THE HOLDER IS MOUNTED?

The bumper cover has three tiny holes (looks like starter or marking holes) which form a triangle, and match up to the frame which fits inside the holder. Included are three screws (flat tipped, Phillips head). I'm hestitant to drill into the bumper cover without knowing whether there are pre-threaed holes/anchors inside the bumper cover. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS OR DIRECT ME TO A SOURCE OF INFORMATION?

I wouldn't even put it on, but it's generally not a good idea to give Chicago, and suburban Chicago cops a reason to pull you over!

Thanks for any help you can provide! -Leo-
Jleo@att.net

Default Don't drill those holes !

Make a plate mount the right size to hold the lic. plate. Cut it so there are two tabs that extend downwards far enough so that they can be bent at a right angle under the main bumper ( bottom-side of the center lower grill ). There is a very heavy duty beam under the cover. Drill in from below after taking out the grill first. Place felt or other cushioning material on the back of the plate. Screw in from below.

Now you can remove the plate easily and not have any unsightly holes.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting and probably viable solution, April/verdegrrl. Have you done this before?

I'll certainly look into this solution, however it seems like a lot of work if in fact there are threaded receptacles for the screws (my original question) behind the "starter holes" already etched into the bumper cover. It seems like it might be just as easy if the holes are drillled properly, and the threaded receptacles there, to just put pearl painted (bumper cover color) plugs in the holes should I ever need to go 'front license plate free'.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THERE ARE THREADED RECEPTACLES IN THE BUMPERCOVER FOR THE LICENSE PLATE HOLDER??
Jleo@att.net

When I removed the front plate holder, I found 4 hand-drilled holes. They really need to be plugged. Guess my dealer is not as smart (or as careful) as April.

Thanks for the reply, jjcooley....the TSB you provided the link to is for a '98 A6, which has a slightly different bumper and significantly different plate holder and attachment. How can I get the TSB for the '96?
Jleo@att.net

Sorry, Leo. I guess I wasn't paying attention to the year. I don't know if there is anything on the '96 in the bulletin listing of the VW/Audi tech site, but you can browse there and see if you find what you need. Good luck!
