I'm happy to report that my steering wheel controls for the factory phone are now operational...

Well took the car back to the dealership today to get my locks and the phone programed and all went well. I can now scroll through a list of up to 100 names/numbers and call and answer and send using the steering wheel. I've also learned that there are *MANY* other options that can be programed into the car using the VAG tool. I was supposed to get a complete list from my dealer but ran out of time. Maybe someone else can get a hold of the list. One example the service manger gave was that you could for example program the car to turn the windshield wipers on when you start the ignition. Not to purposefull but shows the potential of how far the programing will go.
