Route calculation on Nav system?...

Route calculation on Nav system?...
How does the system decide the fastest route? Is it only based on mileage or does the system consider the type of road? ie interstate vs. local road? Assuming I have left all the route options on.
It appears to be based on mileage. On a trip I just entered into the system, it takes me off the interstate sooner than I normally would. This is a trip I have done many times and know that the slightly longer route is faster because it includes significantly more interstate miles. I wanted to see how the Nav system would do it for conparison.
I also found a large hole in it's mapping database. My parents street, infact entire neighborhood is not in the system. Maybe this is a good thing. I will just tell them I haven't come home because the nav system does not know the way.

Apparently Mileage Alone...
I drove from Concord to Scotts Valley in California and basically knew how to get there. The Nav kept trying to get me off the Freeway and onto surface streets to connect with another Freeway...even though the Freeways intersected just several miles ahead. I think things will get better with future/updated CDs.

You can select (under Route Options) to use either Fastest (time-based) or Distance. You may want tocheck that you are set to fastest, which, in theory, takes into account the speed limits on each road. That's how it calculates the ETA, which seems to be fairly accurate, as long as you stay at or near the posted speed limits. Of course, if you exceed those, or hit traffic, the ETA gets adjusted...
