Default Should I, or shouldn't I (?)...

have the fuel sensors replaced next week? I have an appointment for a 6 month (1 year at 10k miles) service. I'd rather not have the interior torn apart if these "replacement" sensors are going to fail. Opinions?

Dealer/oil/schedule notes; Dealer here is using Valvoline 5W30 which was "recommended". I'm having Mobil 1 0W30 put in.

I was offered a next day appointment if a loaner wasn't required (or anytime after that). If the loaner was needed, first appointment was 1st week of June.

Are there Union 76 stations in Montana?

I had the fuel sensor replaced in my "01 4.2 and I don't think they had to do anything with the interior. I think they had to drop the gas tank because they told me to try to have the fuel level as low as I could. My guess is that the sensor is in the tank.

they just drop the tank. Take it in low on gas, they will fill it up when they give it back

Default I don't believe they actually drop the tank, just empty it...

Default I'm leaning toward NO

I was in the same position a while back (~6mo ago) and chose to have them replaced...now the "new" senders are flaky

Would I have had the same problem with the "old" ones? Probably. Would I be as annoyed about it? Probably not - I'd just be kicking myself for not having had the replacement done.

FWIW, I believe the tech just lifts the carpet in the trunk to get to a hatch to access the fuel sender. Try reading through the PDF I linked in the lower portion of this thread ... it's not really that complex a procedure.

Default Your call. They lift out the rear seat. There is a pretty good size

hatch with a hefty seal. It is best if you can bring the car in with a little fuel as possible as it takes longer if they have to pump the tank. They try to avoid removing the tank because it causes a lot of work. If they have to drop the tank, then the rear suspension needs to come out in a QTR. The mechanic would prefer to minimize exposure to fumes as well.
