Going car shopping with Mom this weekend
I would go for the 2.7t... Same performance of the 4.2 but for $10k less......assuming she wants an auto tranny......I bought the 2.7t because of the 6 speed over the 4.2 auto
Your mom could care less about the 4.2 superior looking rear quarter (fender flares and wider tires)......that is basically the only difference
The 4.2 has other things that she probably would not care about (lower, wider track, more aluminum parts, electric steering wheel option (both heat and adjustment), rear "bucket seats", etc. and some of those are options that will just cost more.
Get the Sport package on either one so she won't be whaling around out there (she'll just be wailing around).
Maybe at first (if $'s not too big an issue), just let her take each one out for a drive and see if she has an immediate preference toward one or the other. Don't let the saleman sell her on either, just drive 'em!
Have fun, good luck.
Looks-wise, the 4.2 wins in most people's minds. As what LMGotts4.2 said about the increased amount of standard goodies in the 4.2, plus the steering wheel moves out of your way when getting out and then is part of the memory when getting back in...right back to where you want it...very nice...also very helpful for those of enhanced abdominal girth.
Several 2.7T owners repeatedly say the 4.2 is not worth the extra jack, but 4.2 owners almost univerally feel it is (~$6k)...what she thinks is up to her.
Agree, she should get the sport suspension and wheels even if she is not so sporty, because the sport suspension is not super sporty and hard anyway (it's what the standard should be) and the suspension, seats, and especially the wheels are a bargain for the price of the package.
If your mom likes exclusivity at all...go for the 4.2...those bad boys are rare...even in Audi-infested areas like the northeast.
Enjoy.
