Default `02 S6 Avant feedback

Hello

I'm considering purchasing a new `02 S6 Avant and am looking for feedback from current owners.

I have never owned an automatic and feel like I'm hanging up my skates, turning in my uniform, giving in to the man, or basically getting old.

I did drive one yesterday and very impressed with the road feel and dynamics. The extra room would be greatly appreciated and the interior is spectacular.

Also have anyone driven in the snow with those big wide stock tires?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Default I wouldn't pretend that the Tiptronic is a substitute for a stick

but the sport mode on the current S6 is one of the better systems out there. Three of my other cars are manuals so I can relate to your trepedation. I've only had mine for a couple months and the first few weeks of learning the tip's "style" was a consious transition for me but I'm pretty comfortable with it now. To me the most negative aspect of the tip is the "adaptive" learning characteristics in the normal drive mode. As much as I appreciate the designer's intentions, I really would prefer that the transmission do the same thing in the same situation every time rather than try and read my mind with only partial success.

I can't comment on the snow part as I've not had that experience.

Default Re: S6 tires in the snow

I haven't driven my S6's stock Conti's in the snow, but based on past experience with similar high performance tires in snow, I wouldn't want to try it. If you get the car and want to drive it in winter conditions, be prepared to just bite the bullet and get a snow tire/wheel package. It will be $1,500 or so well spent, and much more valuable than the optional $1,350 nav package.

Default Ditto that...the S6 tires are summer compounds - which turn into slicks

below 45 degrees (hence the snowflake in our displays). Nearly crunched my S4 in the first snow fall 3 winters ago. You sure wouldn't want to ding those beautiful wheel flares 8^J

With real winter booties you'll have the ultimate 4 season estate!

Have had my S6 for a week. Unlike many of the members of the forum, I wasn't a raving Audi fan before I bought the S6, so my opinion might be a bit more objective. The car is fantastic. It is roomy, comfortable, well-appointed, and flat out flies. I switched from stick to auto several cars ago, so I didn't have your stick/auto quandry. However, my wife's BMW has a stick, and I can tell you shifting the tip with the steering wheel buttons can be just as much fun.

You will want to get snows, though. See my post from last Saturday (maybe Sunday), and you'll see why.

Default I depends on why you like a stick

I haven't found the tip to be as fun as the stick in my 96 A4.

The reason I never liked automatics in the past was because of their poor shift points. With the tip, this has never been a problem. It does a really good job of shifting when I want it to.

Default Re: S6 tires in the snow

I got my S6 Avant Dec. 3 and, despite the warmest winter on record this year in Toronto, I didn't think of driving it until it had snows.

I put Michelin Pilot Alpine (H-rated) 255-40R-17 on the original rims (I know, sacrilege) and have since driven in two bad snowstorms. The only vehicle that passed me was an S8 (I assume it had snows as well). I have also indulged in short blasts to 180 km/hr (to get rid of pesky BMWs, etc.) with great stability and handling.
