Default Synthetic oil again, a question

I have the opportunity to buy Quaker State synthetic for my 2001 A6 2.7T.
Any reviews or comments, pro or con?

My impression over many years is that Quaker State products are sub-standard discount products.

Default Concur.

We use Mobil1 in the TT and the A6.

Older A6, 160,000k miles used Castrol 20w/50 dino juice exclusively. Still tight.

Default I hate to mention these guys again, but ...

have you checked out the last oil test in Consumer Reports? Their testing methods are pretty objective and should show relative differences (if nothing else).

Default Why?

I have run ONLY Quaker State 10W30 in my '85 CRX coupled with ONLY a Purolator filter...and after 165,000 miles, this damn thing still does not burn or use a drop of oil.
I'm not saying it is not sub-standard...I just question whether there is much difference between these dino products...I suspect they're all (most) created in the same place.
I realize my one example doesn't mean squat...but I've always had a "good feeling" about Q.

Default Good Point . . .

My bias is the result of information about the Quaker State product over many years. But whether it is justified, or not, I expect you've followed a pretty rigorous maintenance schedule. Honda engines, at least of that vintage, have had an industry wide reputation for reliability and longevity. I expect just about any oil/filter combination used with your auto and a rigorous maintenance schedule would produce good results. The point being, proper maintenance is probably more important than the oil/filter combination being used. I suspect at the margins, the products might make a greater difference.

The sources of my opinion are many from word-of-mouth many years ago, to a few mostly forgotten articles comparing the properties of synthetics and petroleum base oils. The one source that DOES stick in my mind was a conversation with an engineer for a customer of mine about 18 years ago, Burmah-Castrol. The talk got around to auto oils in the marketplace, and the good and the bad. He loved his own product, but was full of praise for some others such as Mobil 1. When he got around to Quaker State, he snorted, and said he didn't think it was very good. Of course, this was just one man's opinion, and I am the furthest thing from an expert.

Default My '84 Audi has 650K and use cheapest dino, my '01 A6 I use Mobile 1, go figure!

BUT I change oil every 4K on the 84 and every 5K on the 02... THAT's where the key is!!!!
