Default Do I buy my '99 A6q or lease a new 2.7T?

Help - my lease is up in 3 weeks on a 99 A6 Q, with all the options and 40,000 miles. I can buy it from the leasing company for $22,500 ($2,000 less than the buy-out price in the lease). Or, I turn the car in, and lease a new 2.7t (probably with the sports package) for just under $700/month. Yes, the 2.7t engine is much more powerful, and there are a few new bells and whistles on the 2002 models, but otherwise it's basically the same car. My '99 has had very few problems, and I can buy a 48 month, 48,000 mile comprehensive extended warranty for another $1300. I'm thinking I'll keep the old car until I have a chance to check out (don't kill me) the next generation Mercedes E-Class (due out this Spring) and the BMW 5 series (due out this Fall), and then decide between one of those 2 cars and a 2002 2.7t. Does the price for my existing car seem fair? Any other ideas/suggestions on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Steve-everyone here has their own opinions on such choices, but my two cents-if your current A6 is in great shape, and the lease company is giving you a superdeal to put your name on the title, buying out the car is the way to go. Definitely opt for that extended warranty. These cars, as you know, are expensive to fix. My dealer said the tiptronic, for example, is a $9K replacement. The reason I suggest buying out your current car opposed to swapping it out for a lease on a new 2.7T-have you seen the drawings for the next generation A6? That car looks HOT. I believe it's due to hit North America either in 2004 or 2005. I would save your money, and plan on trading up to that car. That's what I am doing.

Default Have you driven a 2.7?

If not, then drive it before you decide! It drives like a totally different car - no kidding!

I agree pretty much with Alex's observations, but personally I won't drive my 99 2.8 for 2 or 3 more years until the next generation appears. I have moaned about the lack of power since I got it, although it's wonderful in every other way. As soon I can get out of my lease, I'm getting a 2.7!

I think 22k is a ripoff - should be closer to 20k (Edmunds wholesale). But OTOH, are you sure about the $700/mo? I think the new 2.7 is closer to $800 these days.

But if you are totally happy with the 2.8, then yeah you might as well keep it. Be sure to get an extended warranty.

Yes, I have driven the 2.7, and I agree it is a different driving experience - I too have wished for more power since the day I got my 2.8. But, let's face it, when driving in rush hour traffic and/or once you're up to speed, the extra horsepower isn't noticeable. It's a close call, the 2002 2.7t (especially if I get the sports package) would be a GREAT car. But, it would cost another $20,000 above the purchase price for my '99. I tried to get the lease company to go even lower, but the 99's are doing farily well at the east coast auctions. My other thought is to keep this car, and buy a used Boxter for the nice weather days. The prices for used Porches have dropped quite a bit lately, and I would think my A6 would be very happy to have a Boxter cousin next to it in the garage! Anyone have any thoughts on used Boxters? Pricing, problem areas to look out for, etc?

Thanks.

Steve

If the 99 is in great shape and resonable mileage keep it. As far as the Boxster is concern? I like my C5 better. Drove the Boxster a few times, does nothing for me. C5 it!
