Reasons for Buying an A6 instead of an All Road ?
Just wanted to hear from A6 owners what they like about A6 vs. AllRoad. Is it the ride? I'm still weighting whether I will buy an A4 3.0, an A6 3.0, or an AllRoad 2.7.
What's your reason for choosing an A6 ? What are its advantages ? Do you like it for long drives?? Thanks in advance for sharing
It was a no brainer for me. I got an '01 A6 Avant for $37k and have never regretted it for a second. It's all subjective though, so only you can decide. If I were to buy today, I'd probably go for an A4 1.8 for even more bang for the buck. My carpool mate has one and it's great.
If you will use the rear seats often, the A6 may be a better choice, otherwise the A4's fine IMO. The A6 has a smoother ride w/ the longer wheelbase, they each have their pluses, depending on what attributes matter most to you.

Jon
The A6 if you need the space only
The AR if you would like to have manual trany and 250hp.
It's up to you, what do you need?
Biggest observation is that the allroad feels MUCh heavier and it does not handle nearly as well. However, i do not think that it is supposed to.
We both LOVE our cars and occasionally, we will switch for a few days...we use the allroad for all family activities, trips, etc.
the allroad gets all of the comments though. I can't recall the last time someone said nice car to me. However, with the allroad, it is almost a weekly occurance.
my advice is for you to decide the purpose of the car and what your priorities are...utility vs. performance. once that is clear, it will be easy to choose and frankly, you can't got wrong. good luck.
I like both cars, each has it's own characteristics.
There are days when I enjoy driving the allroad, mainly because it's a stick and I get to control my ride a little more. But most of the time I find myself in the 4.2. The car is awesome.
The allroad is good for hauling items, and the dogs, and is great on the beach.
Either way it's up to the individual, both cars are great.
Good Luck..
A few days ago I bought a 2002 A6 4.2 from McKenna Motorcars in Norwalk, CA. I live in Kona, Big Island of Hawaii, and Mike McKenna is a friend of friends. After my disgust with the Audi dealership in Honolulu I called Mike and asked him for suggestions (he has a dealership here in Kona, and one on O'ahu as well as several in California). He had his Audi sales manager call me, and as mentioned, I bought an A6.
During our conversation Mike mentioned that he owned an Allroad.
The relevant part of this conversation is that Mike, who owns literally thousands of cars (his Norwalk dealership sells Audi, BMW, and Porsche) chose the Allroad. When pressed he admitted that the A6 4.2 was a "much better" car than the BMW 540i (which I was also considering).
I consider Mike's choice of the Allroad to be high praise considering his options.

The quality of ride and handling is something I consider more important than going off road. So, I'm not sure if spending the extra $$$ is wise. On the other hand, there's performance. I guess the new 3.0 engine is a smoother engine than the 2.7 turbo ... hmmm .. a difficult decision ... I know Allroad gets a lot of praise.

In which case, the comparison is easy. The AR is several thousand more than the A6 2.7T. If you need the space and like the design, it may be worth it to you. The Allroad also attempts to add clearance, but I don't see this puppy off-road.
Note that the price diff between A6 3.0 and A6 avant is less than the diff between the AR and the A6 2.7T. I suspect this is because of the extra suspension stuff (and the kewl styling)
I just got an '02 A6 2.7T and I LOVE it. I think it's a *huge* bargain compared to the A6 4.2 (faster, although power delivery isn't as smooth cause of the turbo) and certainly compared to the 5-series and MB E series! Given the supply scarcity compared to the 3.0 and 4.2, I think a lot of people agree with me.
I traded up from an A4 2.8, and I much prefer the A6. More power, backseat legroom, smoother ride, more gizmos.
