Default Homelink wiring question-radar detector folks can help?

I am considering tapping into the Homelink to power up an auto-dimming compass mirror. I know some folks out there have used the Homelink connection as auxillary power source, particular for radar detectors, so I hope some can answer a couple questions for me. I am planning snaking some 18 gauge wire from the moonroof housing down to the Homelink visor:

1) My understanding is that there are two (?) harnesess/clips connected to the visor. One is brown, the other is black. I assume this is one each for the Homelink and the Map light. Which one of the two is for the Homelink?

2) I have not yet examined it, but is the Homelink connection strictly a two-wire positive/ground connection? Which one is the hot, and which one is the ground?

3) Is there any chance that an 18 gauge wire can be squeezed into the harness plug to make the connection without cutting the wires?. If not,
what kind of connectors did you use to mate the wires after the cut?
Thanks.

I haven't yet explored the sunroof area or visor to find power, mainly because the fusebox is just so easy to snake wires to. There is plenty of space behind the dash, and the roof liner can accomodate wire aroung the edge.
I recommend 22g wire -18 is overkill. These little devices can't draw more than a few hundred mills, no need for 18q.
I tapped my radar detector to a fuse marked 'heated steeringwheel'. I figured it to be the perfect source - first, my car doesn't have one, plus it is switched, plus it already has a sufficient fuse to power several toys.
I used a 10 cent fuse tap from Radio Shack and soldered my wires to that, before insering it into the terminal. Be sure to tap the FUSED side, not the powered side.
Good luck.

If you already have an auto-dimming mirror, the a/d w/compass is just plug and play.

Default No, I don't. That's why I am asking.

I have to lay in the wiring to power it, because no wiring to support the mirror is currently present.
