<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/32631/compass_mirror_installed.jpg"></center><p>I just received my OEM Auto-dimming Compass Mirror today and couldn't wait to install it. For many of you, this is a simple upgrade from your existing auto-dimming mirror.

How is mine any different ....you might ask? Mine is different because my car never came equipped with any auto-dimming mirrors. The auto-dimming mirrors are found with most A6's with the Premium Package (this varies by model year).

Here's what I did:
1) Deciphered the electrical schematics from my handy Bentley CD-ROM to find the function of each of those six wires
2) Identified the ignition power, ground and reverse wires and "snaked" three pieces of 20 gauge wire from the sunroof panel to the fuse box. I could've just tapped into the HomeLink power/ground source but, (a) I was already running wires for my handsfree microphone and (b) at some point, I am going to locate the reverse lead in the fuse panel (it's only a matter of time). For those curious, the reverse lead will disable auto-dimming when the care is in reverse.
3) Then, connected a 5amp fuse near the fuse panel, hooked my ground wire to a nearby "bolt" in a metal piece under the dashboard.
4) The wiring harness from the auto-dimming compass mirror has 6 "male" pins. I was lucky enough to find an Auto Salvage place (P.A.P. Parts) in Atlanta who sent me the "female" part of the wiring harness (plus extra wire) from a totaled A6; I wasn't about to go clipping wires inside the mirror. For those without the harness, I have the appropriate part numbers to help you obtain what you need from ClairParts or your friendly neighborhood Audi dealer. 5) The rest of the install was very simple. I followed Joshua's steps in the Tech Section - Mirror Compass Upgrade .....thanks Joshua.
6) Drove around in circles in a parking lot to calibrate the mirror (the police just happened to "take notice")
