Car and Driver puts RS6 and new S4 ahead of M5 and M3!!
In the May 2003 issue, there are three comparos, two we are concerned with...
The Heavyweights: (RS6 WINS by two points, 96 vs. 94 for M5)
Jaguar S-type R, BMW M5, Mercedes E55 AMG, and Audi RS6
Middleweights: (S4 WINS by 6 points, 96 vs. 90 for M3)
Audi S4, Mercedes C32 AMG, and BMW M3

Been covered before here, but I just read it last night. What I find encouraging is....
... that Audi beat the competition by playing a slightly different game (rather than take on MB and BMW at their strengths).
RS6 beat the M5 by being "fresh" while the M5 is getting tired. The RS6 beat the MB by being able to incorporate computer wizardry without deleting the driving experience. Amazingly, the RS6 got very high marks for styling; even though it is based on a fairly old A6 design.
S4 beat the M3 by being a more pleasant car to drive. Testers were put off by the hard-edged feeling of the M3. The S4 was comfortable, smooth, and we all know the 4.2 is bulletproof (whereas the M3 seems to live on the ragged edge of mechanical self-destruction). $45K seems like a great price, too.
Maybe C&D is getting old, and therefore less swayed by the b*lls-to-the-wall performance cars. In any event, it's all good news for Audi.

The ranking RS6, M5, E55 is exactly the opposite of E320, 530i, 2.7t
Interestingly enough while running on the same basic body style and chasis these carss characters and personality can vary so much within their perspective models. the E320 was praised for its sporting handling and refinement while the E55 is somewhat detached and uncommunicative. The 530i was the leader in handling and fine ride compromise and the M5 trail the RS6 in handling. The turbos in the 2.7 was criticized for unlinear throttle resonse and was pointed out that "even the best turbos have faults" that the same problem was not pointed out in the RS6. I am sure if C&D tested the E500, S6 or 4.2, and 540i again the ranking would have been different again. Just thought it would to interesting to point this out to you guys, what do you think???
