2000 A6 2.7T six speed vs. 4.2 tip
Curious about the general opinions here about these two engines. Performance/reliabilty/esoteric info
I have read the numbers/stats... more interested in personal impressions. What made you choose one over the other? Cost aside.

As far as engine choice goes, even tho I never owned a 2.7t or a 4.2, I had two Audi turbo cars before I bought my 4.2.. a 91 200 20v and a 94 S4 20v. From those experiences plus what I garnered from this board, the turbo engines need to be chipped to realize their full potential, but by doing this you increase the risk of turbo failures and it will void most dealer warranties these days. With a 4 year 50,000 mile warranty, that was more than I wanted to risk. Also, turbo's are very temperature sensitive.. I live in SoCal where its above 80 degrees alot of the year and turbos lose alot of HP with each degree over 75 or so. On a hot day (90-100) it would feel like the thing had lost half its power.. Also, those turbos get hot.. heat breaks down the engine oil faster requiring more frequent services and I had alot of heat related component failures as a result ( hoses, aux water pumps, gaskets etc). I decided to go with the v8 4.2 just to have 300 horses on tap all year plus the maintenance reports seem to be minimal. Just my opinion of course..
