Hypothetically speaking.. Would it be possible to replace the gears in a tiptronic

for a 4.2 with the gears from an S6? Or would it be cheaper to simply put an S6 tip in a 4.2?

You would have to change both the trans in front and the final drive in the rear

The actual five gears are the same between the two tip assemblies, but there are three differences in the overall front transmission assemblies as listed in the factory Bentley manuals. There are specific listings and part numbers for the US A6 4.2 and the US S6. They are;

-the intermediate gear for the front
-the front final drive gear
-intermediate gear for the rear

Those items (which are all contained up front) have different ratios for the US 4.2 vs the US S6. In addition, The rear final gear is also different in the US 4.2 vs the US S6, so you would need that assembly as well.

There would have to be parts available first of all... don't think they exist.

It is not really a topic to explore since there is nobody in this country doing mods to these trannies. These cars are low production with owners that are very unlikely to ever to do anything like that. Too bad,
