Buying a used A6....what should I most look out for?

As far as possible problems with the vehicle. I'm looking at a 2001 4.2 with under 25,000 miles. Thanks.

I'd check to see if it has ever been wrecked or repainted.

Also check the service history of the vehicle.

Bought my '00 4.2 2 weeks ago. It's a great car. Are you buying from an Audi dealer? I bought mine from a neighbor and the dealer gave me the service history of the vehicle. Mine had to have the rack replaced and I've seen other postings on that here. Others have had problems with tie rod ends. You shouldn't worry too much since you're still under warranty. I had to replace the tires on mine (29k miles). I also did the 30k service (new plugs) which cost about $350. Otherwise it's a spectacular vehicle. Go for it!

get it from an Audi dealer, and get the audi warranty b2b with no deductable. Then you will be happy. Great car but not cheap to repair, since everything is high-tech.
go for it, 4.2 engines are one of their best engines.

intensive suspension inspection...bad winter.

The audi dealer I go to in MD notes that a lot of cars including Mercedes and BMW have been in with extensive suspension repairs this spring. OK...I've bent a few wheels on our 4.2A6Q but didn't really expect the suspension to have problems.

So beware, this sucker has 16 balljoints and tierod ends apparently aren't too robust either.

Check the wheels for bent/out of round and tires for bulges, cuts, etc.

You want four wheels of the approximate same tread depth or four new tires. Figure 165 each plus mounting and balancing for Dunlop SP9000 tires (Tire Rack).
