Default Vibration or Shutter During Tight Radius Turns

I searched the previous discussions and I didn't really find anything on this issue. I have a 1999 A6 2.8 Quattro Avant with 28k miles that was bought through Audi's Assured pre-owned program. It appears to have 4 new Continental tires. The day after purchasing the car, I reported to the dealer a vibration or shutter when accelerating from a standstill while taking tight left or right turns. The dealer looked at the car, reported all was in specs, and claimed I could drive any fourth generation quattro on the lot and that I would feel the same shutter. Was this a line of bull, or do these cars have this problem? My 5-speed 1989 200 Quattro does not have this problem. Thanks for your help, Michael.

Default They all do that.....

Every A4 and A6Q I've driven/ridden in has done that at low speeds. It's sort of unnerving, but it appears to be "normal". I don't know for sure, but I think it has something to do with the all wheel drive/differentials. I've felt the same thing in 4WD Jeeps when the diff's were locked.

Default Normal...

Does it have aftermarket wheels on it? I went from OE 215/55-16 to 235/45-17 and when I made the switch, I get the shudder on slow, full crank turns. The OE sizing did it to a lesser degree. I always assumed that with the wider tires the track changed a little and caused it to be more pronounced.

My 98 A6 2.8q does this too - Audi service told me it's the Torsen diff, and that it's ok.

They don't all do it though.

More than likely due to the EDL. Mine does it, too. It sort of sux, because it tarnishes an otherwise beautiful driving experience.

Default Pre-2001 Quattro models all do it

Had the same problem with my 00 2.7TQ. According to the dealer it is the Quattro system you are feeling. They supposedly fixed this "shutter" in post-01MY cars equipped with Quattro systems.

Default If what you describe is a little vibration in the wheel, which can be felt.....

at full-radius and relatively slow left or right turns, I have had this in my '00 Avant since day 1. No residual problems. I would say don't worry about it.

Default You are right, they most definitely do not ALL do it....

My old 100 does but the A6 does not. I too thought it could be the centre diff but when this failed, I fitted a new one from a very low mileage 97 A4 ( they're all basicaly the same), mine hed chewed up all its worm gears.

The fault was just the same after the "new" diff was fitted despite my hopes it would have been transformed.

My theory is that it is the rear diff and that sooner or later it will destroy itself. When this happens and I fit a "new" one, I will let everyone know if it cures the noise/vibration/judder.

Thanks for all of your input! I feel better knowing this is "normal," but it is a bit of a disappointment seeing as I can only interpret this behavior as a design flaw. Thanks again. Michael.
