A-6 speedometer/speed sensor problem
Intermittanly for several months, the speedometer on my '98 A-6 worked erratically and at times not at all. The odometer wouldn't work either. I had a bad tie-endrod that was replaced. Eventually, after running codes and not seeing anything else, the speed sensor was replaced. Everything worked well for a week, then it stopped, only to resume working a week later for no apparant reason. Another shop was doing some work on a few of the many re-call items this car has had, and found a cracked CV boot on the left front wheel. They hypothesized that grease was intermittently being thrown, and obstructing whatever is the speed sensor pickup. The first shop says this is bunk and that the speed sensor for the speedometer is enclosed in the transmission. Anybody have any thoughts on this. As you might tell I'm not that knowledgeable on these issues. thanks

When your speedo is out, does your odometer quit working to?
If they quit working together than you have a sensor or wiring problem. If the odometer works when the speedometer is not then you have an instrument problem.

Yes, but the the rest of the display works fine. Someone thought it was a display issue, but that doesn't seem at all likely. When the speedometer is flat line, it won't work in reverse - I usually don't go fast in reverse, but it does register something about 5 mph. It also seems as though the low speed turning is more difficult also.
