Default warm up/cool down turbos

I just bought an 01 A6 2.7T and am getting advise about warming up and cooling down the car before and after driving. some people tell me not to worry about it and others say it's a must... any input?

Default Re: warm up/cool down turbos

I don't own one yet (working on it) but from everything I've read in this forum, it is a very good idea to have a warm up and cool down period for the turbos if you want them to last. Also the use of Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil is recommended.

Default it's a must... unless you own stock in the manufacturer of the replacement units...

as little turbo spooling as possible under the 150 (or even better the 170) degree oil temp. mark AND within the last few miles of driving before shut down will GRRREATLY extend the life of the turbos... as will the use of the full synthetic oil (mobil one). i'm not suggesting full warm-up or cool-down at idle in the driveway, but very sensible beginnings and endings to your sporting runs will serve you well.

Default Warm up and cool down is a waste of time and just not very practical or realistic.

"Errr Ed, what the hell are you doing sitting there with the engine running?" Uhh I'm letting turbos cool down." Nobody has time for that, and if thats what it takes to keep the POS on the road than it isnt worth owning. Every turbo on the 2.7 Ive ever replaced has been for lack of owners not even following Audi's ludicrous oil service interval. Buy one with a proven history of service, a warranty and just drive. End of rant.

Default Agree; temp just starting to move to hit it; drive it in easy the last mile when I've been roosting

YMMV, but that - and good oil and oil intervals - has kept my 3 turbo cars (2 chipped) alive and happy.

Some people get quite **** about this topic, but I don't think it's coincidental that marketing/discussion/installs of turbo timers have plummeted over the past few years; when I bought my 97 A4 1.8T, they were all over the place. I'd like to think if it were that important that we'd be all buying those first off.

BTW, happy GIAC owner as of last Friday.

Default Don't nail it after starting and before shutting down the engine

I usually take it easy the first five or so minutes and before I get within a mile of my destination I don't over rev the engine.

This would seem to be common sense...I can't say I never drove hard but I would say that 90% of the time I practice this. The few times you need to go fast at the start/stop cycle should not have any ill effects.

Default Where's the data???

The cool down stuff makes sense but no data to back it up. I have own turbos for 23 years (saab and audi) and when using dino oil the coking of oil lines was a real problem. With a good syn ( I use amsoil) this is really not a problem. Also the 2.7T has an after run cooling system for high temps, thus a turbo timer is fruitless. Some have install lower temp sensor that turns on your after run cooling system at lower temps.
