Turbo friendly warm-up/cool-down?
This is my first experience with a turboed car. I'd like to know what warm-up and cool down procedure I should follow, if any.

Re: Turbo friendly warm-up/cool-down?
I don't push the car hard until the OIL temp gauge goes half a mark above 'cold'. And usually I try not to push the turbos when I'm close to my destination, otherwise I let it idle for a minute or so.
I read in another forum that the 2.7T engine has a silent pump that circulates coolant (not oil) through the turbos after the engine is turned off to cool them off...

You're right, thermo operated electric water pump runs for up to one hour
This is not to say that you should not warm up the car, before pouncing on the throttle. Just that cool-down is not as critical as it once was for oil cooled turbos.

A little care will extend the life tremendously. Gentle warmup
and cool down can add 40-50K in miles. Most people don't realize that without some sort of cooling mechanism (for when the car is off) the turbos can get hotter than when they were running sometimes due to heat soak. This tends to coke the bearings. Think of it as smoker's lung for turbos!!!! Treat your baby with respect and you can get a long healthy life out of those 2 little turbos. You don't want to get a bill to replace them prematurely I assure you.

There is very little oil used to lubricate the bearings ( ceramic ). The main cooling medium for ...
the turbos is engine coolant - not oil. This is different than most other (older especially) turbo applications. Yes, coking is still a slight issue. Remember though, that the electric water pump is cooling the water cooled turbos and therefore the bearings and oil passage, as well as the block after shut-down.
I always advocate a gentle warm-up, and a slowdown in driving when you are close to your destination. This will prolong any engine's life. Extra special care does not seem to be required. Remember that VW uses some of these same systems and warranty's the turbos for 100K ( IF you follow maint. sched. ).

I understand a gentle 2 min cool down. What is a gentle warm up, ie, something diff from not punching it before general warm up?

Just like the old thermo rad fans, this operates only if a certain temp is exceeded
Pop open the hood after a hard run or a very warm day. You should see a small stream of coolant being circulated back into the coolant tank. It has a faint whir you can hear as well.
