Default Oil filter....pour oil in it when installing or not?

Again...sry for the newbism. Looking at the bently manual it shows the oil filter parallel to the ground. Other cars I've owned they have been tilted up, so when you fill the filter full of oil when installing it it doesn't spill...much. Does it really matter if you fill it? I know you wet the gasket to make a good seal, but is it critical to fill the filter when replacing? Thanks.

No need to fill the filter.

Default So I'm guessing when you pour the oil in the engine it will find its way there anyway? I wonder why

people have always told me to fill it? Thanks!

Default Not exactly.

The filter isn't filled until the engine is started and the oil pump fills it.

The reason for pre-filling the filter is to limit the amount of time that the engine runs with no oil pressure. I see the reasoning behind pre-filling the filter, but potential damage to the engine for the few seconds it runs without pressure is so negligable that it is not worth the effort.

I don't bother.

Default Use synthetic and you're even better off.

Synthetic saved me at least one engine when I hit a cement block or a big friendly rock on the beltway at 530 in the am and ripped out the oil pan, destroyed the oil pump, bent the transmission crossmember, and holed the transmission pan.

Pity the poor sods on the 'way behind me.

As I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for the flatbed (never never never tow some cars!) I'm watching about three other cars hit the same flinking object. A big tractor trailer finally knocked it off the road but took out his left front tire. Stopped him too.

Lady in front of me with a newer VW bug wasn't so lucky....just kept going without shutting her engine off and seized the engine about 1/2 mile ahead of me.

Default Just to add, that even if somebody was so inclined to

fill the filter first they could never get the filter screwed on before all the oil ran out of it. They would just end up with a mess and wasted oil.

Default Not hardly. If you fill it, let it soak in a little, fill it so it's about 3/4 full..

I only lose a tiny amount when I screw it on.. Not like it's upside down or anything.. On the 4 cylinder cars, it's even easier.

Default Yeah, I wet the media, but don't have a lot of excess beyond that.

It's easy to do, seems sensible.

Default A little bit like wearing belts & suspenders :-)

The notion of doing a pre-fill with the oil filter is a strategy to reduce the amount of time that the motor goes without full lubrication pressure. This strategy is very sensible on fresh engine rebuilds that are essentially dry parts - although any rebuilds that I do, I also use assembly lubricant that solves that problem.

When you are doing an oil change, typically you are draining a warm engine, performing the change and then starting back up in a half-hour. Oil film is still clinging to the valve train/main bearings, etc. and their is low/no risk to the parts as the pressure builds (IMHO). If you can avoid spilling the oil on yourself - there is no harm in doing so - the oil pressure needle responds a second or two sooner...

Peace,
eric
