Wood trim repair

Has anyone repaired the wood trim that tends to crack. What are the best procedures?

Buy new or find used pieces, but the same could happen again!

only part I've ever seen cracked is in my A4 avant (drivers door) and my cost on one is $145

retail is probably close to $250 on that part.
