Default battery replacement

My buddies wife drives an A6. It was in the shop for an unrelated repair and they told her she needed a new battery and rear brakes. Went to replace the battery at home and can't figure out how to get it out. There's a panel to access the terminals but there's no way it will fit out through there. Do you have to remove the entire plastic cowling that's over it. How do you do that? Dealer wanted nearly $300 for a battery which seems criminally high, then again if the battery reuires major surgery to get at that's what they'll do but I can't imagine they would design something like that.

Default Just pull the rubber gasket off, then slide the entire plastic cover off... <edited>

by sliding it toward the front of the car. The battery is held in by one bracket on the passenger side of the battery. Just loosen with a socket to get the bracket off.

I went OEM with my battery replacement (got a deal on one for MUCH less than what you were quoted), but there are several aftetmarket alternatives.

You should also replace the cabin air filter while you are in there.

The cowling has to be removed, but it really isn't all that difficult. Certainly worth $300 to do it yourself.

Great info thanks. Didn't want to offer to help then find out it was going to kill the whole weekend. Are the cabin filters just cleaned and reinstalled or do you buy replacements? I assume replacements are a dealer only item. Anything weird that I need to be aware of when disnconnecting the battery. Obviously she'll need to reset the clock and radio but there's not exotic theft deterence system that's going to go crazy on me or anything is there? The battery looked pretty standard to me. Anything exotic there to be aware of that would preclude grabbing a replacement from Costco (this a buddies wife car - no power draining aftermarket accesories to consider here).

Default You might not need the radio code, but have it handy...

I think I had to reset my clock when I had my battery disconnected for a while (doing some other electrical stuff), but suprisingly, I never needed that radio security code.

The cabon air filter is available from ECS Tuning for $20 plus shipping:<ul><li><a href="http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Audi&amp;engine=2.7T&amp;mod el=C5%20A6&amp;submodel=Quattro&amp;category=Clima te%20Control&amp;subcategory=Filters">ECS tuning</a></li></ul>

Default 9V Battery

A 9V battery attached to the battery leads with alligtor clip wires will keep the codes stored. If you replace the battery quickly, it won't lose the codes.

I'll make sure he has it thanks. It should be in his manuals right?

Default Yes, the code should be in the book for the radio...

not in the car's user manual. There should be a book just for the radio in the leather folder. If he does not know where the manuals are, check the slot under the steering wheel, which is where that stuff is usually tucked away.

Default Went to Sears Auto Center to get a DieHard

at 109.99 + 12.99 for installation, thought that was a good deal. So I went to one (in Newark, CA) and they said they had it, but then when they looked at the car, they didn't want to install it, thought something would go wrong. Very disappointing. I think they were freaked out by the plastic valence panel surrounding the battery.

Went to another Sears store (Mt. View, CA) and they were able to do it without any problems.

They have a battery memory saver so that you won't have to reset the stereo security code.

Don't go to a dealer. One in the area quoted me an hour's labor ($140) + cost of the battery ($180) .

Well thanks for all your good advice but unfortunately when his wife went to start the car this morning the battery was already dead. He hadn't gotten my email with yuor suggestions yet so he just had AAA tow it to a local mechanic who put in a new battery for $150 which is fair. I got another question about their brakes thought that I'll put in a new thread. Thanks again to all you guys this place is a great resource.
