Cluster Fun

Attention all cluster/electronics fans. Here is my situation.

About six months ago, the temp and gas gauges on my 1999 A6 Avant stopped working. Local Audi dealer tells me I need a new cluster. I circumvent their high prices and get a cluster from eBay.

I popped in the replacement cluster, ran the Vag-Com to update, and it worked like a dream. Bright, new cluster with everything working awesome.

About thre weeks after I replaced the cluster, the same thing happened. Temp and gas went dead. Everthing else works perfectly. Before I go and get a new, painfully expensive cluster insrtalled from the dealer. I need to know what went wrong.

Is there some possibility that the electrical system is shot, there is corrosion on the contacts, or there are little mice meddling with my car? Any suggestions??

sounds like to sending units for the temp and gas are burning out the gauges (if that is possible)..

...if you get a new cluster without fixing this problem, the new one will stop working too....I would look at the sending units...Without seeing it, I'm just guessing...perhaps someone has more information about this problem, but for now, look there...I don't think that it is the cluster that is causing the gauges to stop working...
