Has anyone experienced problems with their cruise control working?
I'm having problems again with the cruise control on my 99 Avant (automatic).
Whenever I turn the cruise switch on, the gear display goes blank (the D is no longer highlighted) and the transmission acts strange. If I'm driving, the transmission stays in 5th, but the engine RPM increases by about 200. When I turn the switch off the tranny shudders a bit and the RPM drop back to the original level.
I plugged in my vag-com and watched the tranny indicator while enabling the cruise control, it gives me a z or z2 code (can't remember exactly what the code is) when the gear selection light goes out. The only reference to this in the Bentley manual points to a problem with the multi function switch on the transmission.
The strange thing is that it comes and goes. It did this about a year ago for a few months and then went away. Now it has started up again. The only time I get the multi function switch error is when the cruise is enabled.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

z indicates multifunction switch in between gears
could be a bad multifunction switch on the tranny, or it could be simply out of adjustment.
I once pulled a walnut out of that multifunction switch. Driver couldn't move shifter lever out of Park at all.
