Idling - gas usage ?
Speaking of current events, I was wondering, for a 2002 4.2, while double parked, at what point is it better to shut the engine and restart ? 5 minutes ? 10 ? I've heard starting ignition uses more gas than idling, thanks.

Actually, it's any more than 10 seconds

Good point. But a Bentley owner wouldn't care about the cost of neither parts nor fuel.
One of the (many) reasons a Prius gets 60+ mpg is it automatically shutting off the gas engine when stopped for more than a few seconds. So this advice is sound. Of course, Toyota engineered it so that restarting is almost imperceptible to the driver, unlike most other cars which require user intervention. I think I may test this hypothesis for a month to see if I can do better on gas. At $3++/gallon I'd try anything.

what kind of mileage they get and they respond by saying "well, my tank usually lasts me about two weeks". Dumb a$$, what does that mean? :-)

The window stickers proclaim 11/18 city/hwy. That probably translates to a real life 8/15. Scares the hell outta me.

The Prius comparison isn't quite the same issue.
Granted, the Prius is designed for the engine restart to be inperceptable, but the starter is also beefed up to take the quick on/off restart.
I discussed this with a mechanical engineer at Ford awhile ago. Most starters in cars are not designed to restart that often. If you're in stop and go traffic, restarting your for every 10 second pause would seriously degrade your starter to the point that your savings would be negated by how often you'd have to replace it.
