Timing belt question

Default Timing belt question

I'm in the midst of changing my timing belt (and snub mount, and BPV) and I've run across a potential problem. I marked by belt and position of the cam and crank sprockets. The new belt is on and all the the marks I made line up but with the cam sprocket aligned, the crank sprocket is off of the factory marks (on the damper pulley and lower timing belt cover) ~2-3 teeth counterclockwise.

Here's the question: do I go with what the car was running prior to replacing the belt or do I go with the factory alignment? The car was running fine prior to the tb change, although a bit sluggish even with an APR chip. I'm leanig toward going with the factory marks, since the car was in an accident some time ago and I have no idea whether the 'tards at the body shop (that's a story in itself!) messed with the timing belt or not. The Bentley manual says simply to line up the cam/valve cover marks and the damper pulley/tb cover marks.

Could you have accidentally moved the crank while loosening the pully bolts??

Default No. The old tb was installed when I took off the damper pulley (m)

The marks I made still correspond to where they were with the old tb installed.

Line it up according to the marks on the pulley.. It was probably off..
