Does this occur in cars that thump in the trans???
For what its worth here is some data logged today showing the TCU calling for a retard for the gear change.
apparently this only happens when under load and I assume it to smooth the shift.
You will see that under load the torque got to a healthy 404 then the TCU sent a request for a reduction of 176[third colum]and the knock in the last line was obviously a result of the request shown as ignition retard by deg as in all data logged so far this only appears after the request.
This is a first to second shift in a 4 speed CML trans with no issues.

Condition
Transmission holds shift too long, will not upshift

No DTC's stored in TCM.
May be caused by an incorrect oil temperature
sensor reading from the "Conductor Strip with
integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature
Sensor" -G93- (flex foil).
Service
To check for incorrect oil temperature sensor
reading, perform the following (with engine
cold):
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool.
- Switch ignition ON and start engine.
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid Data
Transfer" Mode.
- Press buttons -0- and -2- to enter Address
word 02 "Transmission Electronics".
- Press -Q- button to confirm entry.

- Road test vehicle.
WARNING!
When road testing a vehicle, ALWAYS
use a second Technician to operate the
VAG 1551 Scan Tool.
Never place anything between you and
the driver or passenger Airbag.
When condition occurs:
- Check channel 1 "ATF temperature".
?Normal transmission fluid operating
temperature is 110pC - 120pC.
?At approx. 137pC the TCM goes into "hot
running program".
Note:
Transmission oil temperature may also
rapidly climb to a high temperature within
the first few miles of driving.
If the VAG 1551 Scan Tool oil temperature reads
approx. 137pC or higher:
- Press . button to advance program.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to "end output".
When procedure applies to vehicles within
The New Vehicle Limited Warranty and
adheres to Warranty Policy guidelines, use
the following:
Part Identifier: 3700
Labor Operation: 3700716 50TU
- Replace "Conductor Strip with integrated
Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor"
-G93- (flex foil) as outlined in the appropriate
Repair Manual.
See SRT for Part Identifier and Labor
Operation for replacing flex foil.
- Road test vehicle to verify condition has
been eliminated.
In the ZF 5HP24A autobox, the temperature sensor is supposedly "in the harness" I have not actually seen the device, (TOZOM8 has cut a harness open)
I have discounted the temperature aspect however, as I have experienced TCC control problems at the full range of transmission fluid temperatures starting at 28C, below which the TCC is commanded to not lock.
I have thought that an intermitant in the Temp sensor wire could be a possibility, but logging the data, I see only very small Jumps in the output (1-2 degrees, and no direct time of occurance association with the TCC control signal.
