Recode a new key ??

Hi,
I have a new key for my`97 8Q 4.2. (only ever had one)
I know how to programme the key to the doors etc. but without going to the dealer.... does anyone know how to code it to the immobiliser... there must be a better way than paying the local stealer a kings ransom..
If any one does know !! ..... Please help !!

I assume you have a Euro/Brit car? Do you have an immobilizer?

Pre-facelift U.S. (97-99) cars don't have an immobilizer.

Yes I`m UK based..The car is Euro. and yes it has immobiliser?? Does your Question mean there is a possibility Euro cars dont have an imobiliser?? ... Is there a certain proceedure I need to follow.... I can programme the key to the car central locking and have it as an individual key with the individual user settings...seat / wheel / mirrors etc.. the key will open the car and deactivate central locking / reset user settings etc / it will unlock the steering column ....but wont start the car as it is still immobilised... original key works fine....
Any help Please.............

Dealer only usually-they generate a number online to Germany and

use that to synch immo and key

Yes, I think that's the case.

I didn't realize pre-facelift Euro cars had immobilizers.
