Default Electronic Cup Holders?

Did some interior investigating last night (have to do something before bed!)and took the cup holder off to see the "compartment" underneath. What in the world is the wiring connected to the cover for? Has anyone else seen this?

Default The wiring is a proprietiary device which sends an electromagnetic field through the aluminum cupholder rings...

The device is activated by the weight of the cups themselves. A magnetic field surrounds the cupholders and electronically stabilizes the liquid inside, preventing the soda from sloshing around during hard cornering, acceleration, or braking. It also evaporates any liquid which may spill, protecting your beautiul leather seats.
But seriously, I'm sure that you are looking at the wiring for the cellular phone. The jack, which is plugged, is on the right side, just below the cupholders. As a side note, one must exercise extreme caution when fastening or unfastening your seatbelt while you are using the cupholder. I had a soda in the cupholder (no flames please), and nearly knocked it over when attaching my seatbelt. You see, the cupholder is positioned so that one's fist hits the cup nearly dead on when adjusting the seatbelt. I'm sure that many will knock over their sodas if caution is not exercised.

LOL! I wish you were right about the stabalizing! Phone jack makes sense. If I had to pick one thing about this car that I wasn't happy with,(and even this is a stretch) it's that dang cup holder! That's why I was messing around with it in the first place. I'd love to figure out an alternative. I wish they would have put a little pop-up one next to the brake, like the A6 has.
I may alter the existing one into a matching leather arm rest instead.

Actually Brad is not too far off. The electrical connection was explained to me by my Audi salesman as a coffee (drink) warmer that is activated when the heated rear view mirrors are on.

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but under the cup holders there is also the manual rear lid release, in case the electronics malfunction.

The wire is for the cell phone. It connects the phone to the stereo.
