Running out of gas
As I returned to London this afternoon, I turned off the M40 to get petrol, with the trip computer reading 10 miles to empty and the fuel gauge in, but not at the bottom of, the red zone.
The car died before I could get to the pumps. I started it up and it died again a few seconds later, and then refused to start again. Fortunately, the road to the petrol station was both short and downhill and I was able to get the car to the pumps without much difficulty (although the car is *very* heavy without power steering)
Filling the tank cured the problem.
What's going on here? Isn't there supposed to be a reserve tank, even if you are at the bottom of the red zone? Comments please.

Why do I get about 250 miles from my first 1/2 tank of gas, and only about 150 from the second half?
