Default Ivan, LarryTT or whoever can help: another radar detector hardwiring question:

I'd like to hardwire my radar detector this weekend. I'm installing a uniden product, which came with the wire and plug for the direct connection. The skimpy guidebook says to connect this to the fuse box, and also says that it must be connected to a 12V DC outlet. Does this mean that I can connect the wires directly to one of the fuses(like the #8, car phone fuse), or do I need an adaptor? Ivan's instructions included an in-line fuse holder--is that necessary?

Default Some answers, and look for Colonel Bogey for the rest...

In line fuse adapter is not necessary. I changed my mind on that.

The car runs off 12vDC, so it will be hard to find a wire in the fuse box that is anything else! Probably impossible. If the Uniden came with a wire to hardwire, did it come with a connector to tap into a wire? Some call these "vampire taps." They squeeze over an existing wire and the new wire, penetrating the skin of the wire to make contact with the metal core.

In order to connect that wire to the fuse you need either the tap I mentioned above to go into the wire coming out the back of the fuse panel behind #8 or an over-the-fuse adaptor for a mini-fuse. I have not found a mini-fuse adapter yet. Go talk to the people at Radio Shack. The guys at mine seemed to get this question twice a week. It'll really help to see a representation of these parts.

I'll be out all day so perhaps The Colonel will show up, as I know Larry is at the CT TT meet. Good luck.<p>Ivan
