Pardon the newbe question...
does anyone have experience with the K&N drop-in airfilters?
My brother swears to me that they noticeably improve performance...
but then he says a lot of things...

This has been thrashed around here a bunch...
Most do not like the fact that they are an oil-bath filter, and some have reported cold-start problems.
Yet, like you say, others swear by them.
I believe the general approach here is, naw, don't do it.

If he says "noticeably" I would love to see what he means by that. Often times
there is a couple of HP accrued by virtue of using a K&N filter. Go to their website for some interesting info. I have used them in cars and motorcycles over the years. Typically they breath better than OEM filters, and of course they do not have to be replaced. You simply clean them and re oil them. There might be some "improvement", but I can assure you it will not be noticeable. BTW, I have seen an interesting case where a friend had a noticeable improvement when he but drag pipes (straight pipes) on his Harley. When dynoed, it showed he had lost HP - insufficient back pressure for his setup. He equated noise with "noticeable improvement." You will hear lots of instances of seat of the pants improvements. I always say, "show me the dyno slip pal!"
