Is it possible that a K&N high-flow air filter might actually decrease torque or HP in a 1.8T?

The guy at the tuning shop I was at...
that did my GIAC chip; he said most people don't need a K&N filter. Won't notice any real performance increase.
He said the only real benefit is you can wash them, which will save some $ down the road.
He also said that most people he has seen with them use way too much oil, and end up fouling things up.
Anyway, just thought I'd share that for what it's worth...

Thanks for the feedback. Installed a K&N filter tonight...
Performance seems much the same... get the sense that the rpms "may" move up a little faster now. Maybe I'll get some improved mileage.
