'00 TTQ Recall: Suspension Rust
"Audi Recalls TT, S3 and A3 Models
October 5, 2001
Audi is recalling 41,890 vehicles worldwide due to rust problems in the rear suspension of some four-wheel-drive models, the company said.
The recall applies to TT and S3 models made between September 1998 and March 2000, and A3 models made between February 1999 and March 2000. Only four-wheel-drive models are affected.
The corrosion has caused the suspension to fail while cars have been at rest or moving slowly and has not caused any known injuries, an Audi spokesman said.
The A3 and S3 models were not sold in the United States and only a few of the affected TTs were sold in America before the defect was discovered."<ul><li><a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/dai/2001/october/20011005_dai_audi.xml">Audi Recalls TT, S3 and A3 Models</a></li></ul>
Thousands of Audis are being recalled following a sudden suspension collapse and loss of control in a handful of cars.
Audi has confirmed that high-performance TTs, S3s and A3 Quattros bought between 1999 and 2000, which all share the same four-wheel-drive underpinnings, are going back to the factory after corrosion in some cars weakened the rear suspension arm, causing it to snap.
Six incidents have been reported to Audi out of 3300 potentially affected TTs and 1300 S3 and A3 Quattros. The manufacturer estimates that around a dozen cars will be affected.
Audi says it knows of no accidents caused by the fault and that the failure tends to happen at low speed when full steering lock puts a heavy load on the suspension arm.
Owners of affected cars will be contacted to have a new part fitted free of charge.
Audi says customers who bought cars within the last year will not be affected because a different part was used during manufacture, but any concerned owner should call the Audi helpline on (800) 699-888 with their car's chassis number."<ul><li><a href="http://www.whatcar.com/default.asp?a=news&b=story&article=314">Fast Audis' safety in doubt</a></li></ul>
