Default Winter Tire opinions please....

I am considering getting winter tires mounted on a second set of wheels for my 225QR. Could I have some feedback and opinions please?

What tire would you get? Dunlop M2's or Blizzak LM-22's?

What size? 225/45-17 or 205/55-16?

I know that the 16's would probably work best if there was a lot of snow but I Iive in the Washington, DC area and as a rule we don't get all that much. So I was thinking to get the 17's and give up some going power for looks and dry handling.

Also, I don't want to get steel wheels for it but don't want to spend a lot either. Anyone got opinions on what may look good but not be that expensive?

M2's. Slightly better dry road handling (factory recommended by Audi & Porsche)

Default i went with M2's on 18" -->

i myself don't drive in knee deep snow, so i really didn't need the flex in the sidewalls. seen some porsche 911's with 40 profiles...so i decided to do the same. 225/40-18.

i drive on snow occasionally like yourself...new jersey. last year, we got tons of snow. more than usual. rode on the OEM's and slid on 1" of snow. mainly because of temperature, the potenzas are like hockey pucks and don't stick for sh*t. i couldn't believe it myself. thought all i needed was quattro...but now i know better.

Default Some of the Borbet wheels are not bad looking. I have them for winter. Quality

is great and they are more reasonably priced so a good winter option.

Here's a picture of them with Pirelli 210 Winter Assimetricos....a great winter tire.

Default I have B'stone LM-22's 205/55-16. Used them last winter in NJ, worked great!

And I agree with you that 17" might be fine for your area.

Default Another option: Michelin Artic Alpin

I have these on my GTI - last winter was the first year. Here in Denver (as I suspect in DC) ice is a lot more of a concern than deep snow. These are champions on ice, absolutely silent on dry pavement, and they handle well for a winter tire.

They are decent but not great when the snow gets deeper as the tread is not very aggressive. Its a matter of what type of conditions you expect. It's no BS that these tires perform as well or better than studded snows on ice. I used to have studs.
