Default backed my TT up into a pole, insurance questions

Like a retard, I backed my poor baby up into a pole. Its got some nasty scratches on it and a dent. I've been told I need to replace the bumber completely which will cost >$1000.

I'm wondering if I should report this to my insurance company and pay the $500 deductible or replace it myself. Will this technically be considered an accident? Will my rates increase?

Keep in mind, I live in Rhode Island where insurance rates are astronomical... I pay $220/month for full coverage (state minimums)... no accidents and no tickets, (I'm a 25 year old male).

Default I am not sure that the insurance co. would be able to tell whether you

backed the car into a pole or someone backed into you...

If you admit that you backed the car into a pole, they could most likely raise your rates because it was an accident.

If you *dont know* where the marks came from, it would be considered a no fault, just like vandalism (whcih insurance co can't fault you for...i.e. raise your rates)

Default If you make a claim, it could raise your rates.

I would pay out of pocket if you can. No matter what the cause, if you make a claim they insurance carrier will frown upon when making your new rates.

Default Re: backed my TT up into a pole, insurance questions

I am a licensed insurance agent in Ohio, and if you report it it will go down as an accident against you even if pay for the damages out of pocket. It should not impact your rates, as no payment would be made, but a tendency of accidents may have an adverse impact on getting new insurance if you get droped for other reasons.
My suggestion is not to report it unless you are required to, and pay it yourself.
