Just received my Playstation2...
I had been torn between X-Box and PS2. Untimately, I decided on PS2.
I met with a potential client last week who is a graphic artist who does art work for video games. I asked him which system he'd go for. He said PS2.
He felt that perhaps Xbox had a bit more potential in terms of the hardware. However, he said that Sony has so many more units on the market, with so many more titles, that Microsoft could really not compete at this stage, in his view.
Not sure if he's wrong or right, but PS2 does seem pretty cool. I've been playing Grand Theft Auto 3, stealing cars and beating the hell out of people. It's really a lot of fun and helps to get rid of the bear market blues!

anyway.. happy to hear you get a PS2!! get test drive it's got the car from the fast and furious on the cover.. fun game..

As a fellow mac/unix user, I'm pleased to know that MS is losing money on the xbox...
...at least they were. A good chunk of change I believe. To them, it's money well spent because it buys them CONTROL. Bastages. Not working as slowly as they wanted, though, I don't think.

they were loosing money at $299 a box, now they're loosing $100 more... (more)
microsoft's strategy is to start with a gaming console to get their hardware into your home... then they add more functionality to it, and pretty soon you don't need dell/gateway, etc. anymore... your microsoft box running microsoft software is the control center for computing, internet, cable/television, phone and potentially automated home functions (lights, etc).
whether everyone buys into it is another question. personally, i have never been a fan of integrated products like this. i prefer one dedicated device for each function. engineers love to cram tons of crap into one box/phone, etc. but rarely does it do any task very well.
though i have to say that apple has really done a fantastic job of providing the average consumer a box that gives them the easiest and must usable method of controling all of their digital content.
