Throttle by Cable. See pic . . .
The silver 4 AWG power wire (for my stereo) goes through the hole where the cable would go if the car weren't throttle by wire:

A throttle cable controls the engine power with a mechanical linkage between the engine and the footpedal.
Drive by wire is a fully electronic control. Moving the footpedal changes an electrical input to the engine computer (ECU), which has control over the air and fuel going to the engine.
