Default Why does my Boost Gauge needle 'flutter'?

I've recently installed a VDO Boost Gauge and have noticed that the needle is fluttering when rising at boost. It is registering correctly, but the needle movement is not linear. It flutters all the way up, and at peak (about 18-20 psi) it fluctuates rapidly.

Would like some ideas here... what doe you think? Gauge itself? Poor connection? Other ideas?

TIA

Default Sorry Glen....>>

Cheap gauge. Guys over on Vortex put an aquarium in-line filter in the boost line to dampen the action...

Default No *hit!?!

That bums me... are you sure? Or, at least sure enough that I need to start looking for new gauges??? Damn...

I do NOT wnat to start the Gauge serach process.. too many posts and no one has any patience any more for questions like that. We've been down this path so many times... F*&K!

Are most gauges (thinking positively now) at least the same on the rear so that I can use my 3/16 line that I've already run?

Default I have a VDO boost Gauge and experience no flutter...

Make sure you used the right fittings for the tubing to the gauge as that could be a reason.

Default As long as...>>

You continue to use a mechanical gauge, all the basic work is done. No problems there. Reading around on Vortex, autometers are no better. You can do a Defi "D" series boost for about $115. Marcus's works well, and the new Pressure and temp gauges I put in appear to be dead on. More money, but it's the classic "you get what you pay for" Thing......

Check your install though...it could be a loose connection on the gauge or "T"....

Default Naw, the connections are solid...

just spent some time reviewing them and everything is in order. Thanks for the info... I hate cheap ****, especially when it doesn't even work right!

BTW, the bike deal is getting interesting. The gal has now gone back to the ex with the "what is this thing REALLY worth?" He told her $12, but now that she tells him that she did some checking and that it's worth considerably less, he is back-peddling. :-)

Take care... dunno if I'll go with the new gauges at this time, I can live with flutter for a while. My mod budget is tapped for the moment.

Thanks though for your insight.

Default Try the in-line filter...>>>

Seems to damp the meter movement and might fix the problem...

Yea, that sleaze...he knew it wasn't worth 12K..
Hope she gets that worked out....

Default I have the same gauge with no such problem....

where did you tap into for the boost reading? I'm tapped off the top of the DV and this seems to work fine. Using 7/32" rubber hose. Maybe you have a kink in the hose somewhere???

Default Bob.........>

The DV vacum line is regulated by the N249 valve. Boost numbers might not be absolutely accurate with that tap. The line to the FPR or the one coming from under the manifold to the N249 (that mess of stuff right on top of the valve cover) are lines directly off the maniflod and should be more accurate.....
