My radio shouts at me!

Each time I switch the radio on after the car has been parked overnight and turn the middle dial (in either direction), the volume either jumps straight to full blast or goes mute. And I have to continue turning the dial to adjust the volume again.

Has anyone experienced this or know why it happens? It only does this after the car has been parked for quite a while, so could it be that my battery is dying?

I have the Audi concert radio with BOSE upgrade as depicted:

There is a hidden function that controls start-up volume on this head unit.
