Where do you recommend buying a VAG-COM and how much should it cost?

It should be one of the first things you buy when starting down the mod slope.
Personally I would only buy it from Ross-Tech and not take any chances with the Ebay or other cables out there. That way you get the full version of the software, the latest version of the software, plus the cable has the dongle built in so it will work on more than 1 computer and you don't have to register the computer.

I agree, but if on a budget, you can come out $100 or so cheaper. I would not do it today, but
it made sense when I did it...
If anyone wants to get my cable and software for $100 off Ross-Tech, I will sell it to you and buy a Ross-Tech. My system is functional but only one one computer (you will need to call in to get an activation code).

You can also get an Audi geniscan for less money...
It will diagnose your codes and reset CEL for you, but you can't run logs, etc. with the geniscan. I think the geniscan costs about $60 to $80.
