VAG-COM requirements?

VAG-COM requirements?
What is needed to have a working VAG-COM setup? A laptop: are there any minimum requirements, ierocessor speed, windows 95+
A serial-OBD II cable: are the ones that you find on E-bay any good? Are there some that work and some that dont?
Software: Is there a minimum version? Can you get a copy from someone, or is every copy licensed like the Bentley CDs?
Has anyone used any other OBD reader software?

VAG COM does not need a lot of overhead.
I recommend an older laptop with Win 98 or better. Of course, a newer laptop that can also support Bentley and has wireless internet is king.
As far the adaptor and the software, buy both from Ross-Tech. If you build same half-a$$ adaptor and steal the software, you will spend more time fixing your VAG-COM than you will the car. The price for this tool is more than fair. Bite the bullet and keep these folks in business!

you cannot get a free copy of software. So it is eazier to buy a TWIN-COM VAG or better from ross
I think you can go with any laptop which has com port. I did not try USB version, but it might be better for future releases.
There is also a palm-pilot version, but I do not know details - check the VAG forum for details.

Isn't there a shareware version of VAG COM? It is pretty limited what you can do...
until you register it for $99. You do not have to buy the cable/connector. It is possible to fabricate one yourself. If it were between one of the $30 ones off ebay and making one, I would make one. I've read a couple of posts that said to stay away from the ones on ebay but there was no real reason as to why. It is also fairly easy to convert your connector from OBDI to OBDII, if that is your situation. There are posts about it.

I bought one from ebay and I am happy with it.
If you on the budget, you can use this cable too. With the free version you can clear codes, recode transmission, door locks..... You are not able to do output tests, only if you register $ 99.

Re:
Where do you get the ODB II connector if you want to build your own? I suppose you just need to get a DB-9 serial cable and an interface. Are the pin-outs available here, or where do you get them?
