If the reason for overheating is due to the fan not coming on, the car really should not overheat when you are moving, only when standing still (or moving slowly). How hot is it?
I would think more the thermostat or the water pump could be the culprit. Those are known to fail. How many miles on the car? Have you changed the timing belt (and thus the water pump)?
Let the dealer fix the sender, top off the fluid, test the car, and have them be responsible.
If you have never done this yourself, why tempt fate when you are going on a long trip?
Get it fixed as it can cause all sorts of other issues. In my case, the overheating caused the seal around the thermostat to fail causing a loss of coolant.
