Default Transmission & rear diff oil change question...

I managed to install the Blueflame exhaust (thanks Scottish TT for the exhaust!) and change both the engine and Heldex oil yesterday, but the rear diff and the transmission were also on the list. Unfortunately the Bentley manual left me wanting for a better description for these services. I am assuming that in both cases I drain the oil from the large drain plug located on the bottom of case, but how do i re-fill them? There is no way that i could just pour the new fluid into the upper plug hole that you use to check the fluid level. is there some kind of cheap pump that i can use to get the new fluids back into the transmission and rear diff? Thanks for any advice.

Default Tranny Fluid Transfer

The upper fill\check plug on the tranny is a bit of a challenge - I found a tip where you take a 14mm hex socket - which won't fit in there to remove the fill plug - and drive the tip out with a punch - then insert and turn it with a 14mm spanner. Worked great.
For fluid transfer, if you have any kind of compressed air and some spare 3/8" hose kicking around, you can easily make a transfer pump. Just take a large jar (I use a 2 quart pickle jar) and poke 2 holes in the lid. insert a 4" piece of 3/8" hose in one and a 3 foot piece of hose in the other, till it reaches the bottom. Seal the hoses at the lid with hot glue. Fill with your favorite fluid and put the long end of hose in the fill hole. Apply the compressed air to the short piece of hose (5psi max) and the fluid will transfer into your tranny\diff.
I have one of those suction guns for fluid transfer but this works WAY better, and much easier to clean - and I can do 2 quarts at a time....

Hope this helps - I can post a picture if requested.

Did this sometime ago on my TT and a friends' R32 ... here are some pics.

I picked up the fluid transfer pump from the local Pep Boys.

Default Drain/Fill...>>

Be sure to drain at the Bevel box plug (over to the left off the transfer box) as well..

Default Picture of hex socket technique

Here's a picture of the 14mm hex plug technique. Using only the 14mm insert helps you avoid the interference provided by the oil line. I could never get enough clearance to use a regular socket.

Default My easiest method to refill tranny

Assuming you have a manual, run a short length of hose (about 5/8" diameter I think, I used hose I had from beer brewing--soft clear hose) through the engine bay down to the tranny. Place the hose into the fill hole (the soft hose will fit and will stay in place). Then fill from the top through a funnel.

You can also find pumps at auto parts stores that will fit tranny fluid bottles. I tried a couple of them, but they were much more hassle and messier than the above method.
