Default Instead of jacking the other thread, I'll open this one: what's everyone's favorite R-compound now?

It's roughly half-way through my season, and I'm finally getting around to outfitting myself with some race compounds. I've seen all the historic threads on the tire choices, I was just curious if people had any up-to-date feelings on their rubbers.

Thanks people!

what are you using them for and what kind of longevity are you looking for?

Default Running around PIR as fast as possible:) No 1/4 mile stuff, all circuit and Auto-X when it pops up.

As far as longevity, well, I can sum that up with my favorite phrase: I have champaign taste on a box-wine budget. So something that will perform well with my non-chipped power and fully modded suspension, but not break the bank or be done after one day at the track. How's that for detail? Need more?

Toyo RA1 is popular. Being phased out for the R888.

Default i would honestly try out Toyo RA-1s

get them shaved or used from a speed WC car. they will wear like iron and are actually pretty fast. they don't heat cycle out like a normal r comp. their fastest run is right before they cord. if you get a road course tire they will suck at autocross. and vice versa. i can vouch for the toyos. but as i want to go faster and am only autocrossing at this point i'll move to a more expensive dedicated auto cross tire. the kuhmo 710's are an amazing dual purpose tire but expensive and don't last that long.

try out some toyos and run high pressures in the front. bimmerworld.com might have some used ones to try for cheap. call them

on a side note i had some used hoosier cup tires that were cheap and ran like stink at track days.

Have always enjoyed the RA-1's. Just got a set of Nittos NT01's we're going to try out.

Default Kumho 710's for the win

sticky as hell, last long time, you win great race! If you are going to be mostly tracking, I would also look at the Hoosier R (as opposed to A compound for Autocross) tires. Hoosier is like Cisco. Might cost a couple bucks more, but that's cause it works!

Default Checkout the Hankooks from Frisby or AIM tires also. About 30% cheaper than Kuhmo or Hoosiers, but

great compounds. You can get them in soft (AutoX) or medium (track).

Default Nitto NT-01's Don't need to be shaved like the RA1's

Looking forward to trying the R888's though

Default I'm running Hankook Z211 225/45/17's mainly because they were on sale and

the place I bought em from recommended them. They are similar to the RA-1's but at the price I got em $110 each mounted and balanced - it was a no brainer. Since I don't know any better - I think they're great. I've run em for two track days now.
