Erratic blinker problem still not fixed after replacing the stalk...
In the thread below, Jeff Bipes said that if my flashers still worked, then it is teh turn signal stalk that's bad. Well, I found this not to be true (but while I was at it, I did have a chance to change out the scratched up steering cloumn covers -- thanks for the "how to", MarTT).

I'm not sure what Jeff meant in his post. When my relay went bad, my hazards worked
fine, but my turn signals did not. Same on my wife's Passat. I fixed mine with a new emergency flasher, and hers by cleaning the contacts on the relay itself. Neither required the stalk to be changed.

I am so tired of getting flipped off every time I turn off of a highway without my blinker!
But hey, at least I know how to take the steering column apart!

not true. best to check bulbs first. start with the cheapest part first...then eliminate the
variables like hazard switch then stalk.
i had erratic behavior with my blinkers...changed the hazard switch...same deal. then switched the bulbs...and that solved the problem. was odd...could have been how they were seated in there. i looked at the bad bulbs and they actually looked good. they also blinked properly, although erratically.
